How did the modern Olympic games get their start?

The modern Olympic games have their origins in ancient Greece, where athletic competitions were held during religious festivals to honor the gods. However, the modern Olympic games as we know them today were founded by French educator Baron Pierre de Coubertin in 1894. Coubertin believed that sports could help foster international understanding and peace, and he sought to revive the ancient Olympic games as a way to promote these ideals.

Coubertin organized the first modern Olympic games in Athens, Greece in 1896, with athletes from 14 countries competing in nine sports. Since then, the games have been held every four years, with the exception of a few cancellations due to world wars. Today, the Olympic games are the world’s largest sporting event, with thousands of athletes from around the globe competing in a wide range of sports, from swimming and track and field to gymnastics and skiing.
