It can be puzzling to open your diagram and find that a certain shape you expected to use is nowhere to be found. Whether you are creating a flowchart, a sitemap, or any other type of diagram, encountering missing elements can disrupt your workflow and raise questions, especially when you’re confident the shape should be available.

This issue is more common than it seems and is usually related to the diagram palette settings.

Understanding the Diagram Palette

The diagram palette serves as a visual library of available shapes and symbols that can be used in your project. Depending on the type of diagram you’re working with or any template settings applied, not all shapes are displayed by default. For instance, shapes specific to certain diagram types may not appear unless manually enabled.

Customizing the palette ensures a more focused and uncluttered workspace, but it also means some shapes may need to be added back before use.

How to Add Shapes Back to the Palette

If a required shape is missing, it can be added back in just a few simple steps. Please refer to the video below for a step-by-step demonstration. The process is as follows:

  1. Click the +Shape button located at the bottom of the diagram palette.
  2. From the list, locate and select the shape(s) you need — in this case, the Site Map shape.
  3. Click Apply to confirm your selection.
  4. The selected shape(s) will now appear in your diagram palette, ready to use.
